The Collectors' Grand Prix

A biennial event

Organised by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is the meeting for classic car enthusiasts. In 1997, the Principality of Monaco celebrated the 700 year reign of the Grimaldi dynasty, a perfect occasion to launch the inaugural edition of this new event.

Following the popularity and success of this historic race, the ACM organised a second Grand Prix Historique in 2000, before making the meeting a biennial event.

50 years of vintage cars

The race is held just a fortnight before the F1 Monaco Grand Prix and uses the same legendary racetrack, which thrills to the roar of antique engines.

The Grand Prix Historique gives pride of place to more than 230 cars representing several generations: grouped into a total of eight categories since 2016, mainly Formula 1, with vintages ranging from the 1930s right up to the end of the 1970s.

Connoisseurs and amateurs

Every two years, classic car owners and collectors from all over the world travel to Monaco, to vie for supremacy on the tarmac in authentic speed racing conditions. The mechanics have a crucial part to play, fine tuning the vintage vehicles down to the last detail. The cars are displayed in open pits, mainly on the Quai Antoine 1er, where the public can admire them at close quarters.

Whether for amateurs or keen enthusiasts, the spectacle is a fabulous chance to get a glimpse of a bygone age or get a first real taste of motor sport.  The convivial atmosphere and opportunity to get up close to the cars makes for a truly memorable experience. Maserati, Ferrari, Jaguar, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo: the cars are the stars!  Every event is a step back in time. In 2016, there were some hugely prestigious names in attendance, among them Alain Prost, back behind the wheel of the Renault RE40 he drove in 1983. Other drivers to take to the track have included Damon Hill, Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jacky Ickx.
